Annual conference turned hybrid

The Interaction Design Association (IxDA) is a globally recognized organization that has been supporting the field of interaction design for over 15 years. With a strong membership base, the association comprises 200 local groups and boasts a community of 120,000 individuals.

In 2008, IxDA held its first annual conference, the Interaction 08. This conference serves as a platform to cultivate a sense of community among interaction designers, facilitating connections, knowledge exchange, and mutual inspiration. The conference typically features a diverse range of activities, including expert roundtable discussions, live Q&A sessions, interactive workshops, group evening activities and social events over the course of three days.

In 2021 and 2022, for the first time in history and due to the pandemic, the conference was crafted as an online-first event. The virtual conference in 2022 was already produced by EVERYWOW. Following this success, the organizers decided to host a hybrid conference in 20223 to keep the advantages of an online event, which is the global reach.

The conference took place in the brand-new convention center of Zurich, with three stages accommodating thousands of visitors. The content featured a mix of pre-recorded and live content and was streamed to a world-wide audience.

IxDA and EVERYWOW

After two consecutive years of online conferencing, IxDA wanted to go back to hosting a physical conference without giving up the advantages of an online format, which is the enormous reach they were able to obtain. Before the pandemic, the conference was hosted every year in a different city around the globe. For this edition, they were seeking a trusted partner to produce the conference in the vibrant city of Zurich. As a venue, they secured the brand-new convention center of Zurich, right by the Zurich lake. The venue offers state-of-the-art technology in sound, audio, and projection systems. However, the handling of the technology requires an experienced tech team. At the same time, being the first time in history, they were faced with the many challenges brought by a hybrid format. This was another reason for selecting a partner that could handle both, the technology, and the content flow of the conference.

The collaboration with EVERYWOW therefore consisted of the technological production of a big conference with three stages, and multiple projections and livestreams, and on the other hand of an equally engaging and high-quality virtual experience.

To reduce the risks of technical failures, as well as to accommodate the limited time schedule of remote speakers, part of the talks were recorded and projected on to the screen. The talks were produced in a movie-like quality and encountered a huge demand from the visitors, with rooms being packed up to the last standing spot.

To increase the accessibility of the conference, live camera feeds, and live subtitles were projected live on the LED walls on-location, making it possible for everyone to watch the conference from every angle.

Let’s realise an extraordinary project together.
